I am wondering if any one out there is hooked on World War One. I have this strong pull towards the ANZACS - the Australians mainly. I have this overwhelming feeling that they were hard done by the English.
Reading and hearing the words of The French Prime Minister, Georges Clemenceau, who after hearing the successful attack at Hamel, cancelled his planned visit to French front line troops and instead visited the Australians to said:
"When the Australians came to France, the French people expected a great deal of you... We knew you would fight a real fight, but we did not know that from the beginning you would astonish the whole continent..."
Also, this war and every other war Australians have fought in. On average, one Australian soldier was worth around twice that of other soldiers.
Ironically, after experiencing first hand the fear that a coordinated attack can have on an enemy, the likes of Major General Heinz Guderian, a German soldier who fought against the Australians at Amien in World War One, studied the approach and incorporated it into German battle strategies. In World War II, Guderian became a crucial leader in the Monash-style blitzkrieg strategy that led to German dominance in the first half of the war.
Australians had to be resourceful, they made hand made bombs with used food tins, nails, gun powder etc. They invented the Periscope Rifles and manufactured them in Anzac Cove. The soldiers who used these became known as snipers. No longer did the Turks have the advantage. They also use to steal other countries supplies and use it against them. eg Rats of Tobruk use the Germans bombs etc.
The Australian soldiers even got to trade items with their enemies eg smokers paper, food etc.
The Australians even made quiet times with the enemies. This helped the soldiers to sleep, rest, or prepare themselves for later battles.
The soldiers wrote themselves in the history books as the best soldiers in the world.
** Rommel (German Commander of the Afrika Korps WW2) once quoted "Give me 2 divisions of Australians and I will give you the world!" **
Also, what I don't understand when Hollywood made the movie "The Greatest Escape" used an American to play an American Soldier. The camp was mainly made up of English and Australian Soldiers. The part played by Steve McQueen - some of the things he did in the movie was actually done by an Australian soldier at the camp. Anyhow, it was Hilters stupidity for putting all the best escapees in one camp. Couldn't he see that if they all got together, they were going to come up with an escape plan? The biggest in history, and it caused a lot of problems for Hilter. He had to use a lot of resources to capture them and this in-turn too a lot of men away from the fighting the war.
I can go on but won't.
Australian Soldiers are the best in the world and I hope they are the most respected and feared.
God Bless them all, in the past, now and in the future.
LEST WE FORGET
